About Municipal Directory
What Municipal Directory covers, how each state's records are sourced, and how to report a correction.
Municipal Directory is an index of U.S. municipalities: the cities and towns, the counties and regions they belong to, and the officials who hold local office. Look a municipality up by name, browse the states that are covered so far, or search the officials directly.
How each state is compiled
States are added one at a time from an authoritative state-level publication: a municipal league directory, a secretary of state, a state archive, or a university institute. The state page names the publication used, and each city and official record links back to the record it was taken from.
Two consequences worth knowing. First, coverage is uneven by design: a state that publishes a full roster of officeholders shows one, a state that publishes only its municipalities shows the places with no officials attached, and a newly added state may still be filling in. Second, the source decides the fields, so a city page can show a council of seven, a single clerk, or no officeholders at all.
What it is for
Finding out who represents a municipality, which county and region it belongs to, roughly how large it is, and where the underlying public record lives. The directory is not an official government site, publishes nothing that its sources do not, and gives no legal advice.
Corrections
Records are reproduced as the source publishes them, and a new build picks up any change at the source. Corrections and source updates are welcome at contact@municipaldirectory.org; please include the page address and the source record in question.
